The Makgadikgadi Pan, a salt pan situated in the middle of the dry savanna of north-eastern Botswana, is one of the largest salt flats in the world with an area of 3900km. The pan is all that remains of the formerly enormous Lake Makgadikgadi, which once covered an area larger than Switzerland, but dried up tens of thousands of years ago.However, it is one of the largest salt flats in the world lying south-west of the Okavango Delta and surrounded by the Kalahari Desert.
We begin and look at our investments from a blank canvas. We celebrate all our milestones. It is our philosophy to recognise achievement and to move on to the next tasks and challenges. Over 13-years experience of successfully raising and investing across various investment vehicles (Permanent Capital Vehicle and four Private Equity funds).
Our team has over the past years demonstrated its ability to raise and deploy private equity capital and to successfully exit transactions, generating returns exceeding its hurdle and in the 80th quartile when rated with private equity fund managers in Africa. The PAPE team currently comprises of investment professionals and back office personnel located at offices in Bryanston (222A Grosvenor Road) and Stellenbosch (14 Louw Street).
The three principals have an association that stems back to 2006 when Zuko Kubukeli and Guy Baxter were the two founding partners of Evolution One Fund, Africa’s first clean technology private equity investment fund. Together with three other founding directors, Zuko and Guy raised USD94m for Evolution One Fund, primarily from European DFIs, and successfully deployed this capital into a portfolio of renewable energy and clean technology investments in South Africa.
In 2008, Zuko established a relationship with RMB Ventures where he met Justin Babaya and worked closely with the RMB Ventures team. This relationship resulted in the formation of PAPE Fund Managers and the establishment of two funds with RMB Ventures, PAPE fund 1 and 2, comprising a collective ZAR550m.
